JUDO
Judo literally translates as " the gentle way". It is a system of unarmed combat, now primarily a sport. Sporting judo rules are complex; the objective is to throw the opponent cleanly, or pin him, or master him by applying pressure to arm joints or to the neck.
Techniques are generally intended to turn an opponent's force to one's own advantage rather than to oppose it directly. A ritual of courtesy in practice is intended to promote an attitude of calm readiness and confidence. The usual costume, known as judogi, is a loose jacket and trousers of strong white cloth. White belts are worn by novices and black by masters, with intermediate grades denoted by other colours.
Judo was founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano. Kano formulated Judo from styles of Jujutsu that he had studied. In Japan at this time many changes in society were occuring because of western influences. A major change was the overthrow of the Shogun and the reinstatement of the emperor in what is known as the Meiji restoration. One manifestation of this change was the decline of the warrior class known as the samurai or bugei. This led to a decline in Jujutsu styles whose main function was martial. In this atmosphere, Kano (and others of other martial arts), changed the emphasis from purely physical to spiritual endeavors. Kano meant Judo to be both physical training as well as a path towards building good moral character and spirituality. Part of Kano's vision for Judo was for it to be a guide in all aspects of life and lead to greater harmony. This is reflected in one saying from Judo, "maximum efficiency with minimum effort for the mutual welfare and benefit of all".
JUJITSU
martial art and method of fighting that makes use of few or no weapons and employs holds, throws, and paralyzing blows to subdue an opponent. It evolved among the warrior class (bushi, or samurai) in Japan from about the 17th century. Jujitsu was a general name for many systems of fighting involving techniques of hitting, kicking, kneeing, throwing, choking, immobilizing holds, and use of certain weapons. Central to these systems was the concept jū, from a Chinese character commonly interpreted as "gentle"—gentle, however, in the sense of bending or yielding to an opponent’s direction of attack while attempting to control it. Also involved was the use of hard or tough parts of the body (e.g., knuckles, fists, elbows, and knees) against an enemy’s vulnerable points. We teach Brazilian and Japanese Ju-Jitsu classes. It evolved among the warrior class (bushi, or samurai) in Japan from about the 17th century.
KRAV MAGA
Krav Maga "contact combat" or "close combat" is an eclectic
Techniques generally focus on training combatants in conditions approximating real-life scenarios. Krav Maga trains combatants for situations where losing would be potentially fatal. Its attack and defense maneuvers aim to neutralize the threat and facilitate rapid and safe escape. These include a variety of fast and fluid crippling attacks to vulnerable body parts through various efficient and often brutal strikes. The improvised use of any available aids is encouraged - maximizing personal safety in a fight is emphasized. There is no other more battle testing system in the world. It is used by the Israeli military and Law Enforcement.
Combat SAMBO
"Defense without Weapons"
Developed and designed for the Russian Military. It is an eclectic system that combines techniques from Japanese JUDO/JUJITSU and native wrestling systems from Russia and various countries. Self-defense, takedowns, grappling and striking are all components of Combat SAMBO. SAMBO (SOMBO, Cambo) is divided into Sport, Self-defense and Military SAMBO. We are a chartered school under the United States Combat SAMBO Association. Traditionally SAMBO had no rank system. GM Michael Galperin who studied with the original founders of Combat SAMBO has developed a belt ranking system to determine a students progression in this versatile system.
